Don't Forget Fibonacci For Fab Fashion

I got some great fabrics from Fabric Mart today. The best piece in the bunch, to my mind, is this wool challis. It's simply gorgeous - a slightly spongy hand, and the colors and print, to my mind, are perfect. And below, you'll see what Anna Sui did with this fabric in Autumn/Winter 2006.

This fabric and other great ones are still for sale at Fabric Mart, so if you are in any way inclined, I encourage you to to go over there now and check out their sale. (NAYY).

I have 5 yards of this, and am thinking of a mind a softly draped dress. I love how Sui used the border print at the neckline and the pockets, which is less predictable than only at the skirt hem.

Her use of this fabric (repeating the border in three uses and in the positions she chose to place them on the body brings to mind the fibonacci sequence.

I find this fascinating, in that we see this numerical sequence and spiral used in nature all the time so beautifully. And when I am creating something, and I remember to pay attention to this formula, either in straight numbers (1, 2, 3, 5...) or in proportion (the spiral), and use it in my own visual design, it often works so well. Looking at the dress above, for example, I can see how Sui (purposefully or not) used the fibonacci sequence not only in repeating the border three times, but also in how she positioned the pattern of the fabric on the body.

I haven't bought fabric in ages (sadly, no sewing time!) but could not resist this gorgeous piece! I am sure it will sell out today after everyone reads your post. :-)
